Hyack hoopsters hit BNW podium

The New Westminster Hyacks won the Burnaby/New Westminster juvenile girls (Grade 9) basketball title by downing the Burnaby Central Wildcats 65-33 in the league final last week.

They then went on to begin the Vancouver and District championship by downing the Mulgrave Titans of West Vancouver 59-44 Tuesday. That put the Hyacks into Wednesday’s semifinal against the top team from Richmond, the McRoberts Strikers.

The junior girls (Grade 10) squad came second in the league after losing the final to Burnaby Central 28-26. Madi Lee and Halsey Hanna were named to the league all-star team.

On Tuesday, they were eliminated from the district championships with a 52-15 loss to North Vancouver’s Handsworth Royals.

The junior and juvenile boys team also came second. The Burnaby South Rebels downed New West 63-38 in the junior final, while the juvenile boys were beaten by the Byrne Creek Bulldogs in the final.

The junior boys team has already been eliminated from the V&D championship after losing 63-54 to Handsworth on Tuesday. In the juvenile tournament, the Hyacks were eliminated Tuesday with a 73-47 loss to the R.C. Palmer Griffins of Richmond.
