Hyacks 12th at Top Ten

The New Westminster Hyacks finished 12th at the Top Ten senior girls basketball tournament in Coquitlam last week.

They began the tourney Thursday by losing to top-ranked Oak Bay Breakers 77-52 with Meriam Ali scoring 26 points in a losing cause. Later that day, the eighth-ranked Fleetwood Park Dragons of Surrey edged the Hyacks 50-48 in overtime with Ali getting 18 points and Princess Frias 10.

Overtime was kinder to them Friday when they nipped Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Ravens 73-72 with Ali racking up 32 points while Izabelle Datayan added 23 and Amanda Zacharuk 14.

They finished the tournament by downing the Kitsilano Blue Devils of Vancouver 48-36 behind Ali’s 26 points and 11 from Datayan.

The Hyacks have a 12-7 record for the season heading into a tournament in Maple Ridge this weekend.

Before that, however, they will visit the Burnaby South Rebels, who were ranked No. 10 in the province last week, on Wednesday, 5:15 p.m.
