Hyacks lose to Jugglers
After finishing second at their own tournament before Christmas, the New Westminster Hyacks senior girls high school basketball team had a tough loss post-Christmas.
The Notre Dame Jugglers, a Vancouver private Catholic school, downed the Hyacks 75-71 on Thursday. Meriam Ali had a big game in a losing cause scoring 28 points. Izabelle Datayan netted 15 while Amanda Zacharuk scored 13.
The Salmon Arm Jewels won the Hyacks' Bob Gair Memorial tournament by winning all three of their round-robin games. The Jewels, whose arrival was delayed by weather opened the tourney by downing the host Hyacks 66-56 during a lunch hour game on Dec. 20. Ali scored 25 points while Datayan had 15 and Camille Sangalang 11 against the Jewels.
That evening Salmon Arm dispatched Pitt Meadows Marauders 74-45 and finished up by downing Surrey's Elgin Park Orcas 60-30 the next day.
The Hyacks went on to obliterate the Orcas 101-44 with Ali scoring 26. Halima Ali contributed 16 with Datayan and Hannah Devos getting 14 each. On Dec. 21, the Hyacks mauled the Marauders 85-55.
New Westminster is 7-4 so far this season.
The Hyacks also finished second in the juvenile tournament with their only loss coming in the final game, 47-34 to Port Coquitlam's Riverside Rapids.
The juveniles, however, did defeat Notre Dame 54-30 with Madisen Obrovac scoring 16 points.
