Hyack atoms disappointed, cheerleaders win
The Royal City Hyacks Football and Cheerleading Club ended its most successful season yet in a weekend of bittersweet results.
The Atom Black Hyacks suffered a disappointing 26-18 loss to the Coquitlam Lions in the league semifinals. Coquitlam subsequently went on to win the league championship in a close, back and forth battle.
Running back Jordan Freeland scored a pair of majors for the 8-9 year old Hyacks, and led the team in rushing. Jude Buchanan also scored, and linemen Darius Wong and Krishan Prasad played solid games on both offence and defence.
Meanwhile, the Hyacks organization won big over at the Vancouver Mainland Football League’s annual cheerleading competition in Surrey.
The Hyacks, fielding the youngest team (aged 6-13) in the league won the Spirit Award for creating the best atmosphere among its cheerleaders and fans. That support helped the Hyacks succeed on the football field this season, where the Hyacks cheerleaders loudly cheered on the sidelines.
The Hyacks club, which added its youngest teams in 2009 and has only had cheerleading for two years, doubled its overall winning percentage among all its teams this season, improved its registration numbers by over 50 per cent, making it one of the largest youth sports clubs in the city, and had three out of its four tackle football teams qualify for the league playoffs.
The club will be holding its annual awards night for its flag, atom, cheerleading and peewee players on December 5th at the NWSS Pearson gym, with the Junior Bantam Hyacks being honoured at the New Westminster Secondary Football Awards Banquet at Queensborough’s Roma Hall on Dec. 7.
