Royals finish fifth at national championship
The Douglas College Royals finished fifth at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer championships in Coquitlam last week.
New Westminster's Dylan Myers scored a goal while midfielder Jordan Marini had a hat trick as Douglas defeated the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks 4-1 in the fifth place game Saturday.
On Friday, the Royals fell 3-2 to Élan de Garneau on penalty kicks. Burnaby Central grad Sahil Sandhu and Jag Gill had given Douglas College a 2-0 lead in the first half in a consolation round game. Sandhu and Gill were named tournament all-stars.
The Royals' hopes for a national title were dashed in dramatic style Thursday when the Vancouver Island Mariners got a last minute goal on a header from defender Dan Cato to defeat the Royals 2-1 in the semifinals.
Douglas had beaten the Mariners in league play as well as 3-0 in the Pacwest Conference final two weeks ago. Ontario's Humber College Hawks downed VIU 3-2 in a shootout in the final.
