Fighting Irish take down Hyacks
Vancouver College Fighting Irish spoiled seniors night at Mercer Stadium on Friday by downing the New Westminster Hyacks 34-13.
Angelo Tanjuaquio was New West’s top rusher with 64 yards on 12 carries, including a touchdown. Pavan Mrock carried 10 times for 48 yards while quarterback Tommy Robertson connected on eight of 22 passing attempts for 101 yards. Seven of his completions went to Tristan Sands who had 91 of those yards.
The Hyacks were without leading rusher Aldrin Asuncion and leading tackler Jordan Chin after both were injured during practice last week.
The lost left New West winless in AAA high school’s Western Conference after going 3-1 in exhibition play. The Hyacks were to travel to West Vancouver on Friday to play the Highlanders, but the game has been rescheduled for Mercer Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
• On Thursday, the Hyacks junior varsity squad defeated Vancouver College 21-12 at Mercer to move into first place in their conference. Adrian Cagampan, Jeff Lugtu and Julian Ramirez scored touchdowns for the Hyacks to improve their record to 3-1 in conference play, the same as Vancouver College, and 7-1 overall. They will be in West Van on Thursday.
