Royals nail down first place
The Douglas College Royals men’s soccer squad secured first place in the Pacwest standings on the final weekend of the season by downing the Quest University Kermodes 6-1 in Squamish on Saturday.
With first place locked up, the Royals lost 4-3 to the Langara College Falcons at BCIT on Sunday in their final regular season game. It was their only defeat of the season to go along with 10 wins and three draws.
The Royals finished first with 33 points, four more than the Vancouver Island University Mariners.
The provincial championship goes this weekend in Squamish with Douglas College playing the fourth-place Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles on Saturday in one semifinal while the Mariners battle the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack in the other.
The league champion will advance to the Canadian championships in Coquitlam Nov. 7-11, although Douglas already has a berth in that tournament since it will be the host team.
• Laura Gordon of New Westminster won five of six matches to help the Simon Fraser University Clan women’s wrestling team finish fifth at a NCAA Division II tournament in Oklahoma City on the weekend.
