Royals roundup

The Douglas College Royals head into the final weekend of Pacwest men's soccer league play sporting a three-point lead on the rest of the field after a pair of wins last weekend.

The Royals put themselves in the prime position by edging second-place Vancouver Island University Mariners 3-2 Sunday to remain undefeated with nine wins and three ties. That gave Douglas 30 points, three more than VIU. Pacwest leading scorer Sahil Sandhu, who went to Burnaby Central secondary, got the first two goals while Gagan Josan scored the winner in the 85th minute.

On Saturday, the Royals, led by captain Dylan Myers of New Westminster, blanked the Capilano University Blues 7-0.

This weekend, Douglas will travel to Squamish to take on the Quest University Kermodes on Saturday. A day later they'll take on Langara College on the Falcons' home turf at BCIT (3:30 p.m.)

Quest will be the hosts for the provincial championship the following weekend (Oct. 26-27). The Royals will be the hosts for the national championship to be played in Coquitlam Nov. 7-10.

The women's Royals soccer squad doubled its win record by edging Capilano 4-3 and Vancouver Island 1-0 last weekend. They sit in sixth spot with 14 points, three points ahead of the Mariners, and will also play Quest and Langara this weekend.

• The men's volleyball season opened with Douglas winning a pair of four-set matches against Capilano. The Royals defeated the Blues 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16 in North Vancouver on Friday and 25-22, 25-22,  21-25, 25-15 in New Westminster on Saturday.

The Royals women's squad split two five-set matches with the Blues winning 24-26, 25-19, 15-25, 25-18, 15-13 Friday and losing 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-12.

Both teams will play host to the College of the Rockies at Douglas's New Westminster campus on Friday and Saturday with women's games at 6 p.m. and the men's at 8 p.m.
