’Bellies beat Burnaby thanks

The New Westminster Salmonbellies got back on the winning track at the expense of the Burnaby Lakers.

The ’Bellies beat the Lakers 8-5 at Queen's Park Arena to improve their Western Lacrosse Association record to 5-4 while Burnaby is 4-4-2 heading into play Friday night.

The turning point came in the second period on a rarely called penalty shot with the score tied 4-4 and the Salmonbellies shorthanded. The Lakers had just scored twice during a five-minute major assessed to New Westminster's Tyler Crompton for checking from behind and were looking for more powerplay goals when one of their players was caught handling the ball in his own crease. A penalty shot was awarded and Kevin Crowley scored on former ’Bellies backstop Joe Bell to put the Salmonbellies up 5-4. It was the first of four unanswered goals for New West.

Crowley finished the night with two goals and two assists while Sean Robinson notched a hat trick. Ilija Gajic also had a pair along with an assist with Kyle Ross getting the other New West marker.

Colton Clark had three goals and an assist for Burnaby with Casey Jackson and Scott Jones connecting for the other goals as the Lakers outshot the Salmonbellies 42-38.

There wasn't much rest for either team with New West heading to Victoria to play the Shamrocks Friday (June 22) and the Lakers playing host to the Coquitlam Adanacs at Bill Copeland Arena starting at 7:45 p.m.

New Westminster will be in Langley to play the Thunder on Wednesday while Burnaby plays host to Victoria on Thursday.
