Hyacks drop first game at provincials
Abbotsford's Yale Lions relegated the New Westminster Hyacks to the consolation side of the B.C. AAA senior girls high school basketball championships with a decisive 72-36 victory at Capilano University in North Vancouver on Wednesday.
New West point guard Ariana Sider had just two points in shooting 1-for-9 from the field before she hurt her head early in the second quarter and missed the rest of the game. As a team, the Hyacks shot 23.2 per cent and were nine-for-18 from the free throw line. Sharmaine Hayley was New West's top point getter with 10.
With Sider sidelined, the Hyacks managed to bounce back Thursday morning by downing the Prince George Polars 74-57. Meriam Ali had 24 points with Hayley contributing 18 and Amanda Zacharuk 17.
New Westminster was to play Coquitlam's Gleneagle Talons Friday afternoon.
