Douglas set for volleyball championships
The top men's and women's college volleyball teams in the province will play for the PacWest championships beginning Thursday at Douglas College in New Westminster.
Two nationally-ranked men's teams, Vancouver Island University Mariners and the Douglas Royals will contest for a berth in the national championships along with the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, Capilano Blues, Camousun Chargers and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Mariners, who are ranked second in the country, split their four regular season meetings with fourth-ranked Douglas and each team has a bye into Friday's semi-final round.
"I can understand some people focusing on the rivalry between VIU and Douglas, but there's no guarantee we'll even meet in these championships," said Douglas coach Brad Hudson in a release. "I've never seen a season with better balance throughout our entire league from teams one through seven."
Columbia Bible College has already eared a berth in the nationals as the host team. If they go on to win the PacWest title, the silver medal team will advance.
On the women's side, Douglas will battle UFV, Camousun, Capilano and Columbia Bible College and VIU for the available ticket to nationals where they'll join the host Mariners.
Play begins with the quarter-finals on Thursday. The women's gold medal game will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by the men's final. Admission to all games is free.
