Junior Salmonbellies facing elimination
Three times the New Westminster Salmonbellies battled from behind in Wednesday's fourth game of their BC Junior A Lacrosse League final against the Coquitlam Adanacs at Queen's Park Arena. But they couldn't do it a fourth time, conceding the last three goals to the Adanacs to go down 9-6.
The 'Bellies trail the series three games to one, and must win Saturday's fifth game in Coquitlam to stay alive.
After spotting New West an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Kyle Robinson 2:24 into the first period, the Adanacs stormed back with three straight. But a pair of goals by Justin Salt got the 'Bellies even before the end of the period.
Ben McIntosh put Coquitlam back in front 34 seconds in the second period, but the Salmonbellies were able to capitalize on a pair of Adanacs' miscues to wrest the lead. Robinson scored his second of the game, shorthanded, on a mishandled rebound and Jordan Catton scored less than two minutes later after intercepting a wayward clearing pass.
Those miscues chased Coquitlam starting goalie Steve Fryer from the net, for all of 19 seconds. Having settled down and regained his focus during his respite on the bench, he reclaimed his place between the pipes by changing with backup Josh Phillips on the fly.
The shotstoppers' shuffle also seemed to help the rest of the Adanacs, who reclaimed the lead with a pair of goals by Casey Jackson and David Joyce 50 seconds apart.
The Salmonbellies evened the score for a third time when Reagan Harding scored early in the third. But less than two minutes later Brandon Bertoia put Coquitlam back in front, this time for good. Matthew Dinsdale and Kevin Neufeld added insurance markers.
