Time to amalgamate New Westminster and Burnaby school districts
Re: Work to be done, but New Westminster school district is in great shape (Letters, NewsLeader, Oct. 24)
School trustee Michael Ewen states, "we are in great shape."
What a joke. We have, what, 11 schools in our school district. Try 55 schools plus in Burnaby, Surrey, Abbotsford, etc. OK, we have a $2.8-million deficit from seven schools. Ewen wants to hire a consultant to find out what went wrong. I'll tell you for free—incompetence. Why have a secretary-treasurer if he/she can't balance the books? Why have a school board if they are not on top of things?
Solution: Join/amalgamate with Burnaby Board of Education. We would get the new high school so fast it would make your head spin. The Education Ministry has put New West on the backburner.
But then, what do I know? Thirty-four years as a teacher, principal and director of instruction hardly qualifies me to voice an opinion.
Remember: If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got.
