A Vancouver-based band and a Texas rock group will headline this year’s Uptown Live street festival.

They’ll be the feature acts for the third annual festival in Uptown New Westminster on Sunday, Aug. 10.

“Without a doubt this is our best lineup yet,” said Bart Slotman, chair of Uptown Business Association, which is organizing the festival. “We couldn’t be happier with the calibre of performers we have attracted.”

Five Alarm Funk plays original music that’s a mix of Afro-beat, funk, rock, Latin and hip-hop. It’s a nine-member group that recently released its fifth album with a concert at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.

Its fourth album, Rock the Sky, was nominated for a 2013 Juno Award as instrumental album of the year.

The Bright Light Social Hour is based out of Austin, Texas. They call themselves a “psychedelic southern rock band.” They combine Southern rock, hard dance, psychedelic blues and deep soul into their music.

Other feature artists include Rykka, BESTiE, Jordan Klassen, The Matinee and Ash Grunwald, an Australian independent phenom.

The lineup on the three stages will also include Headwater, Pacifika, Santa Lucia, Redeye Empire, Halfway to Hollywood, Rich Hope and the Blue Rich Rangers, and Ben Rogers.

Previous Uptown Live festivals followed the Hyack International Parade in May and were done in conjunction with the Hyack Festival Association. UBA has decided to host it separately as a standalone festival.

Along with the music there will be top Vancouver food trucks and art exhibits. A BMX bike demonstration will be held on Sixth Street at Seventh Avenue. A family fun zone will be on Belmont Street. The music begins at noon and will continue until about 7 p.m.

Five Alarm Funk is will be on the Westminster Savings Stage on Sixth Street at Princess Street at 5 p.m., followed by The Bright Light Social Hour at 6 p.m. The other two stages will be just a block away, on Sixth Avenue at Seventh Street (Save On Foods Stage) and on Sixth Street at Belmont Street (TD Stage).
