Nine more join the $100K club at New West city hall

Another nine employees joined the City of New Westminster’s $100K club in 2013.

Financial information provided to city council Monday showed 87 employees earned at least $100,000 compared to 78 in 2012, 64 in 2011, and 66 in 2010.

The top earner was new city manager Lisa Spitale at $186,382 in remuneration and expenses. Spitale replaced Paul Daminato who left at the end of January. Spitale was the city’s planning director and took over Daminato’s job on an interim basis until June 1 when she got the job permanently. Daminato earned $203,000, including expenses, in 2012.

Second highest was fire chief Tim Armstrong at $179,638, which was $3,000 less than he received in 2012.

The provincial government requires cities and school districts to disclose salaries and expenses of all employees who receive at least $75,000. New Westminster had 194 earning that much in 2013 compared to 201 in 2012 and 197 in 2011.

The financial information also disclosed payouts to city council. Mayor Wayne Wright’s salary was $93,205 and he claimed $7,612 in expenses. All the councillors received $36,757 in remuneration except for Coun. Lorrie Williams who got another $699.

Most of the expenses claimed by council went to attending the Union of B.C. Municipalities, Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and Lower Mainland Local Government Association annual conferences.

Coun. Jaimie McEvoy did not claim any conference expenses and was the only one to claim triple digit total expenses ($543). The rest of the conference expenses ranged from Coun. Jonathan Coté at $1,309 to $4,154 for Williams.

She claimed far and away the most overall expenses at $13,248. But almost half of that, $6,075, went toward attending FCM committee meetings as a B.C. representative on its board of directors.

Her expense claims were nearly $20,000 in 2012.
