Urban beach coming to Westminster Pier Park
Life will be a beach at Westminster Pier Park soon.
The city plans to install an urban beach on the Timber Wharf, located at the park’s east end.
The area has been virtually a blank asphalt canvas since the park opened in 2012, although two sand volleyball courts were installed last year. Council approved plans that include a public pathway mimicking the Fraser River’s route, an outdoor group fitness area, hammocks, an art display and an off-leash dog area.
Coun. Jonathan Coté said New West doesn’t have a beachfront, so why not create one. He noted Paris turns its riverbanks into an urban beach in summer with sand, umbrellas and shade protection.
But detailed landscape plans are to be developed before construction goes ahead. The uses are to be temporary until financing can be found to strengthen the wharf’s structure.
The plan is to have the ‘beach’ installed in time for this summer, and to have it stay year-round.
