New West police warns about phone scammers

The New Westminster police department is warning people about phone scammers trying to collect donations for the "NWPD Anti-Bullying Fund."

Staff Sgt. Paul Hyland said the department doesn't solicit donations in that way, nor do they hire private people or companies to so on their behalf. He said the calls originate from various numbers, usually starting with 778-785. The caller asks for a donation of around $300 and then negotiates downwards if they encounter resistance.

Hyland said the department isn't aware of anyone who's lost money to the scam. He said if anyone gets such a call, they should hang up and report the call to police.
