Only one trustee to attend BCSTA AGM
In light of its financial woes, New Westminster board of education trustees has decided to send just one representative to the B.C. School Trustees Association (BCSTA) annual general meeting this year.
The board is in the process of whittling down a projected $2.2 million deficit for 2012-13, and must deal with a shortfall of $2.8 million from 2011-12 while also having to get its spending under control for future budgets.
In the past, New Westminster has sent many of its trustees to the convention, but since the district is "under severe budgetary pressures," trustee David Phelan proposed just one of the seven board members attend. His motion was passed unanimously with chair Michael Ewen selected to attend the BCSTA AGM in Kelowna April 25-28.
