New West officers join RCMP ERT squad
Two New Westminster police officers have been added to the RCMP Lower Mainland's emergency response team.
In January, the NWPD signed up for the squad's services after the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team, operated by the Abbotsford, Delta, Port Moody and New West municipal police departments, was disbanded.
As part of the department's contribution, two New Westminster officers who had been working with MIERT were trained to become part of the RCMP ERT team. They will be based out of New West, but work with the team across the district, which includes 13 RCMP detachments, when required.
Previously, New Westminster was paying about $400,000 a year for MIERT while the RCMP will cost just over $300,000, Chief Cst. Dave Jones said in January.
In a press release Friday, he said joining the RCMP's ERT is the next step in providing quality public safety services in New Westminster.
