Fake cable guy tries to gain access to apartment block
A fake cable guy was reported working a scam in the Queen's Park area.
New Westminster police say a man buzzed an apartment on Park Row early Sunday afternoon. The resident went to the front entrance and let the man in the building. He asked for access to the cable box to do work before an upgrade to take place two days later. But when asked for identification to prove he worked for Shaw Cable, other than a jacket with the name on the front, he was unable to do so said police.
He was also unable to provide a contact name for someone in the building or a work order so he was asked to leave. The resident said the man did not get into a Shaw vehicle but instead headed on foot toward Queen's Park.
The NWPD said Shaw confirmed no maintenance was scheduled for the building that day, and if he had been legitimate he would have had his own keys to the building and the cable room.
The man was described as Caucasion, in his mid-20s, about five-foot-10 with a "scruffy" beard and wearing a grey Shaw Cable jacket and a tool belt.
