Man shot by police outside casino identified

The B.C. Coroners Service has identified the man who died in hospital following a standoff outside the Starlight Casino in Queensborough on Nov. 8 as Mehrdad Bayrami, 48, of Richmond.

The service said in a press release that Bayrami suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the police-involved shooting incident. He had been surrounded for nearly five hours near the casino parking lot after a report of shots being fired.

He was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where he died 10 days later.

New Westminster police had been in charge of the incident, but after the shooting the investigation was turned over to the newly created Independent Investigations Office which was formed to look into police-involved incidents.
