Crown approves charges in New Westminster dump truck fatality
A criminal charge has been approved against a cement truck driver as a result of his runaway vehicle running over and killing a Coquitlam man on East Columbia next to Hume Park in New Westminster last year.
On April 19, 2011, 26-year-old Coquitlam resident and father Mark Holmes was driving along East Columbia when a cement truck coming down Holmes Street—which is extremely steep—barrelled through a red light and hit Holmes' car. Both vehicles tumbled over an embankment into Hume Park.
After an extensive investigation by New Westminster police's major crime unit and collision analysis and reconstruction team, Crown counsel has approved a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death against Mohammad Abdolmalekpoor, 43, of Burnaby.
Four motor vehicle act charges have also been submitted for driving without due care and attention, driving without reasonable consideration, failure to ensure vehicle in safe operating condition, and operating a vehicle without effective service brakes.
His first scheduled court appearance is set for July 9. He is not in police custody.
