The results of a survey of New Westminster residents on the possible replacement of the Pattullo Bridge will not surprise many.

At open houses for its Master Transportation Plan and online, the City of New Westminster asked residents to complete the survey to get their opinion on TransLink's plans.

The results from the 210 responses show overwhelming support for the city's policy to work toward not increasing through traffic for vehicles in New Westminster, with 74 per cent strongly agreeing on the position and only 14 per cent either disagreeing or strongly disagreeing.

Seventy per cent of respondents opposed TransLink's plan to have priority truck lanes on a new structure and 79 per cent said it is very important to discourage additional traffic in New Westminster if a new bridge is built.

"The decision regarding the Pattullo Bridge was characterized by a number of participants as a defining moment in New Westminster's efforts to protect its livability, compared by some to the decision to stop freeways in Vancouver in the late 1960s," said the draft summary report in its conclusion.

The report said the participants were strong in declaring they don't want more through traffic, more trucks and a six-lane bridge with truck priority lanes. But there was less agreement on what they do want.

"This speaks to a need for further effort to be made to work with the community through the Master Transportation Plan process and other avenues to identify a course of action that will respond to the challenge posed by the condition of the existing structure in a way that will have broader community support," said the report, which can be viewed online as part of Monday's agenda on the city's website.

There were 210 responses, including 135 online, to the City of New Westminster's survey on the Pattullo Bridge. Here some of the results:
