Burnaby-New Westminster MP to be NDP energy critic
Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian has been named as energy and natural resources critic in new leader Tom Mulcair's first shadow cabinet.
Julian had been serving as the party's finance critic taking over from Peggy Nash during her leadership campaign. Nash has been reappointed to the position.
When the NDP became the official opposition a year ago Julian was named industry critic by the late Jack Layton before getting the finance appointment from interim leader Nicole Turmel.
The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry covers industries that account for more than 30 per cent of Canadian exports and nearly 14 per cent of Canada's gross domestic product, said a NDP press release.
"This is a critical area for Canada as we find ourselves victimized by the Harper government's decision to shut down environmental assesssments as well as continue to ship our resources off-shore without any value added processing. Rather than maximizing the potential of sustainable development of Canada's resources, this government chooses to erode jobs," said Julian in the release.
First-time MP Kennedy Stewart (Burnaby-Douglas) was named science and technology critic while Fin Donnelly (New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody) was appointed by Mulcair as critic for Western Economic Diversification Canada and West Coast fisheries.
