New Westminster mother charged with manslaughter
A New Westminster woman has been charged with manslaughter in the death of her six-month-old son.
Joyce Dobranski, 32, was arrested in New Westminster on Friday and appeared in court Monday.
Dobranski is reported to have called 911 at about 4 a.m. on June 22, 2011. The boy was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital and then to B.C. Children’s Hospital where he died three days later.
Outside the New Westminster courthouse on Monday, Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Pound told reporters she couldn’t get into the details about what injuries the baby suffered, but said information from pathologists and doctors at B.C. Children’s Hospital, as well as the injuries supported a manslaughter charge.
“It’s a tragedy. It’s an extremely sad story,” Pound said.
She added the baby’s father is cooperating with police and has not been charged.
