New Westminster school district business company pays off debt
The final payment on the $1 million advance given to the New Westminster school district's business company (SD40BC) in 2002 has been paid off.
The district announced Friday SD40BC made its final payment of $189,000, plus interest. Since 2007, a private company owned by the district, has made more than $1 million for the district, said company president Brent Atkinson, a former school trustee.
"The company can now focus its efforts on new initiatives to provide greater financial support to benefit New Westminster students," said Atkinson in a press release.
Board of education chair James Janzen credited Atkinson's leadership along with company directors, offshore partners and district staff with turning around the fortunes of the business company.
SD40BC operates an overseas school offering the B.C. curriculum and English as a second language classes in Wenzhou, China.
