ARTS CORNER: The Arts at One offers great music every week at Douglas College
The Arts at One just may be one of New West’s best-kept secrets.
Besides offering fine performances by students in the Douglas College music department, the concert series—which takes place Thursdays at 1 p.m.—presents performances by professional musicians who are faculty members of the music department, as well as top-notch local and international acts who have earned accolades and toured around the world.
The best part? The concerts are free.
Getting the ball rolling Feb. 23 is Duo Joncol - Music for Two Guitars, with Britta Schmidt and Carles Guisado. The pair have won numerous awards at competitions in Europe and have performed their baroque, classical and contemporary repertoire from Spain to Rumania, the United States to the Netherlands.
Past concerts include Musica Intima, a vocal chamber ensemble whose most recent CD, into light, won the Classical Recording of the Year award at the 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards; concert violinist Angela Cavadas; and Latin/jazz group Susana Abreu & Terra.
Arts at One concerts take place during the school semester every Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre, fourth floor north, Douglas College, 700 Royal Ave. For more information visit douglascollege.ca/artsevents.
