River Market to host Great Canadian Winter Festival

It may not have the tradition of Quebec City's Carnaval, or the 7-km skating rink of Ottawa's Winterlude, but River Market is celebrating Canada's coldest season with its first Great Canadian Winter Festival Feb. 7-10.

Events all weekend include ice carving demonstrations, a hockey shootout contest and classic Canadian cuisine like poutine in the Food Hall. There will also be a special artisan market.

On Thursday, Feb. 7, from 7-9:30 p.m., comedic performers from Say Wha? will put their own twist on bad Canadian writing.

On Friday, Feb. 8, Music Box will perform Canadian music at noon. That evening, lonely hearts may find that special someone to keep them warm and snug through the rest of the winter at a speed dating event at Wild Rice.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, Vancouver Circus School will show off some of their spectacular moves at 1 p.m. and Wild Rice will host a Chinese New Year dinner.

On Sunday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m., the Food Hall will come alive with chatter and delicious smells at a Meet Your Neighbours Sunday supper, a fundraiser for the Fraser River Discovery Centre.

For more information, as well as links to tickets for some of the events, go to www.rivermarket.ca.
