Workshops target the need for financial literacy
While having two out of three good things ain’t bad, the third isn’t so good. The Literacy New Westminster Task Group is aiming to take the sting out of the stress with a series of three financial literacy workshops starting later this month.
At this time of the year, holiday season bills start to pile up (according to a BMO Financial Group outlook Canadians were expected to spend an average of $1,600), people put pressure on themselves by resolving to stay out of debt, and tax season is looming.
“This is the time of the year where a bunch of things come together,” said Dawn Livera, the outreach coordinator for Literacy New Westminster.
The three-week free series starts Jan. 24 and runs on consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the New Westminster Public Library. Participants will be taught how to understand bank statements, credit card statements and agreements, mortgages and more.
“The workshop is done at a level that is accessible to people who don’t necessarily have a high level of skill,” said Livera.

The New Westminster school district is also offering two money skills workshops for parents with school-aged children. A four-week series beginning Jan. 16 runs Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Lord Kelvin elementary while another runs Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m,. at Richard McBride elementary starting Feb. 5.
