City promotes Earth Hour
Earth Hour is coming up on Saturday evening and once again the City of New Westminster has thrown its support behind the global movement.
The city has encouraged participation by the community in the event, which aims to increase awareness of the impact of climate change and its effect on the world's future, since 2008. Residents and businesses are not only being asked to turn out all non-essential lights on Saturday, March 31 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., but to also look for other ways to reduce energy use on an everyday basis.
Last year, New Westminster reduced its electrical consumption by 1.49 per cent compared to 0.7 per cent in 2010. New West ranked 37th out of 67 British Columbia communities in 2011, when the provincial average was 1.8 per cent, according to BC Hydro.
