Family friendly businesses sought

New Westminster businesses are being given the opportunity to be branded as family friendly.

The program is a partnership of KidsNewWest.ca, the United Way and New Westminster's Child Development Public Partners. Businesses can sign up to qualify for the amenities, activities or attitude categories. Amenities are items that can improve a child-care provider's experience, such as a high chair or kids menu. The activities category focuses on children, for example a play area or colouring sheets. A family friendly attitude refers to how staff interact with families.

"When people become parents we all know their lives change," said Marjorie Staal, a Public Partners committee member and executive director of New Westminster Family Place. "By working with the local businesses to promote the Family Friendly Business Program, it is win-win—from the parents who are trying to shop, to the businesses who are depending on their customers returning, to the children learning about their community."

A news release said businesses signing up for the no-cost program will get a window badge and a listing in the program's online directory. River Market, Boston Pizza, Gino's Restaurant and Holland Shopping Centre have already signed up.
